Econsultancy recently published a report, The Progression of Agency Value: Developing a Model for Agency Maturity in a Digital World, conducted with European agencies to understand the effects of digital marketing on their business models and their relationships with clients.
Agencies are operating in an environment characterised by rapid and continuous change, requiring them to respond with more flexible and adaptive approaches.
Some of the key findings of the report found the following:
- There is shift away from traditional practice to new and more diverse areas. Notably from the creation of one way, campaign driven messaging, to two-way, participative platforms and experiences that might incorporate multiple consumer touch points.
- The creation of experiences, rather than messages, often means longer-term and often always-on digital platforms, which brings new requirements around technical capability, skills, processes and approaches.
- The proliferation of devices, channels, touch points and the resultant volume of data are adding new layers of complexity for agencies. How agencies deal with this complexity through technology, people and processes - and make sense of it for clients - is playing an increasing role in creating a new type of value add for clients, and as a differentiator for agencies.
- Selecting the right partnerships with technology providers is becoming increasingly important in supporting agency capability. As the latter progresses, the need to deliver scalable, flexible solutions that enable efficient use of cloud-based technologies is becoming crucial.
